In addition to being fortunate enough to see the Steppe Buzzard I also came across several other raptors this week A female Marsh Harrier perched on a bale of straw A B.I.F. shot of a female Marsh Harrier A Male Marsh Harrier quarters overhead. My first sighting of a male this Autumn A male Pallid Harrier. Also my first sighting of a male of the species this Autumn The Osprey loves its new fishing spot.
I came across this Steppe Buzzard that had obviously been hunting early in the morning and was now wet. It was using the overhead irrigation pipeline as a perch to dry out in the sunshine. This species is listed as a Vagrant in Qatar with only 3 previous QBRC documented records. One in 1996 one in 2004 and another in 2005. So it would appear to be a mega sighting! Steppe Buzzard ( Buteo buteo vulpinus)
Over the past few weeks there have been one or two very flighty Ferruginous Ducks present on the farm. With the Abu Nakha Ponds now completely drained it will be interesting to see if we will continue to be graced by their presence here. I spent some time hidden in thick tall grass adjacent to one of the ponds to be able to get within range to observe two birds and capture these images of one of them Ferruginous Drake (Aythya nyroca)
