I came across this very relaxed juvenile Martial Eagle which allowed me to approach to within 10 m or so as it perched on this dead tree scanning the area for an item of prey. It even allowed me to reposition around it to get the sun in a more favourable angle The dark brown head, upper breast and spotted belly have yet to develop These immature Martial Eagles gradually attain adult plumage over 5 - 7 years. The dark brown eyes turn yellow after 3 - 4 years Note the short crest visible here as it turned away from the wind Prey items include hares, mongooses, small antelope, large birds and reptiles especially monitor lizards
