This is the last lioness having been tranquilised for relocation back to her home range. I was part of the team that carried her on the sling out of the bush and onto the road for loading and transporting back home A Nyala Bull gouging the mud with its horns. They do this frequently when they visit the waterhole An African Sunrise at the end of our driveway. A perfect way to start the day
The weather is cooling a little bit as we head into Winter. Whilst most of the migrants have departed there is still good birding to be had My highlight of the week is this female Greater Honeyguide. It is my first ever image of the species. Now all I need is for one o call me onto a bee hive so I can extract some wild honey I came across this rather confiding sub-adult Dark Chanting Goshawk late one evening as it seemed to be hawking insects on the road. I luckily caught these Black Crakes out in the open which allowed me to get some clear images. Black Crake Male Collared Sunbird Female Collared Sunbird An aptly named Cut-throat Finch Three-banded Plover Marabou Stork. Listed as Near-threatened
Apologies for a delay in posting of images over the last few weeks, things have been a bit hectic. I have been involved in the relocation of Lions, maintenance on the boma used in game relocation, mending of fences damaged by Giraffe, and assisting in bird ringing to name a few. More on that in later posts however, here are some of my recent images Pride of place for this post goes to my first ever sighting and image of a female Black Cuckooshrike. A few weeks ago I managed to see and photograph my first image of the male of this species A Dark Chanting Goshawk in soft evening light A male Spectacled Weaver Long-tailed Paradise Whydah popping in at the waterhole for a quick drink We were visited by a pair of these magnificent Wood Owls the other evening. They have a nest in the chimney of one of our neighbours Red-crested Korhaan female Striped Kingfisher The brightly coloured Black-headed Oriole. Often heard calling but not seen out in the open much A displaying Male Cardinal Woodpecker complete with raised crest and fanned tail. Note the brown forehead and streaked belly and breast which are diagnostic Female Scarlet-chested Sunbird Female Red-headed Weaver And for comparison a female Village Weaver We are now regularly being visited by a few Tambourine doves coming to drink at our house Another colourful species that I often see amongst the bird parties that visit us is this Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird
